TapCaps: Using Gloves With Touchscreens On Your Motorcycle

Often we have devices installed on our motorcycles that need to be "managed" while riding. GPS, music players, smartphones, XM radio, etc. It's not a good idea to do so when riding, but at times it can not be helped.

Many of these devices have touchscreens, and the problem is that often they will not work when you have gloves, especially thick motorcycle gloves.

Alice Ning invented a solution that will allow you to keep your motorcycle gloves (you can buy special touchscreen gloves, but they are expensive, and often not made for riding) and still use your touchscreen device. It's called TapCaps, and in fact it's a small sticker/patch put on the finger of your gloves, in the shape of a fingerprint, that allows you to "touch" your device, fooling it into thinking you are touching it with a normal finger.

Balneo Cafe Racer Dieppe 2012
Balneo Cafe Racer Dieppe 2012
Despite tropical downpours and heavy winds, I managed to ride my motorcycle to the very first Balneo Cafe Racer event of Dieppe, a weekend long cafe racer exhibition, races, parades and demonstrations.

I managed to stay for 2 hours, and then totally soaked, I headed back home, not to return, but I did manage to make some photos of these amazing motorcycles and people.

Here are 37 photos of motorcycles, people and the area.

Unique Ferrari Motorcycle Sold

Posted: 30 Apr 2012 03:00 AM PDT

Ferrari 900 Motorcycle
Ferrari does not make motorcycles as we well know, despite the fact that Enzo Ferrari started his career racing motorcycles. David Kay, a British engineer, decided to make a Ferrari motorcycle to honor the brand, and in 1990 got an official permission by the Ferrari company. So in fact, this is the only "official" Ferrari motorcycle. There are several custom made motorcycles out there that have Ferrari written on them, but they are not recognized by the Italian manufacturer.

Kay's Ferrari 900, a 900 cc engine producing 105 hp at 8800 rpm, allowing the biker to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3 seconds, and a top speed of 160 mph, went up for auction last weekend at Bonhams.

The aluminium motorcycle, weighing only 172 kg was sold to a private, and unidentified, buyer for UK£85,000.

Wow! Was That A Rainy Weekend Or What?

Road Flooded Sign High Water
Last weekend I went to the 1st annual Balneo Cafe racer event organized in Dieppe, a stone throw from where I live, but the rain made it very difficult. My trusty BMW motorcycle was having problems coping with the tropical downpour.

More about the Cafe Racer event in the next article, but this is what I saw on the way back:

Videos: 6 x Belgium Safety Ads

Belgium Eye Each Other
Almost every country has them; motorcycle PSA focussed around safety. Motorcycle safety advertisements come in two flavors; cars need to watch out for bikes, or bikes need to watch out for everything else.

Here are 6 TV ads from Belgium of the first kind, cars need to watch out for bikers. Each commercial starts the same, a few seconds of a surreal image of a car and a motorcycle ridden by an eye. That is because the campaign is called "Eye each other", i.o.w., keep an eye out for each other. The campaign site, Go For Zero is both in French and Flemish.

After the 4 seconds of watching eyes driving vehicles, we come to the ad itself. To be honest, I'm disappointed, since the ads are pretty bland. But it does tell car drivers that they need to watch out for motorcycles, and that is a good thing. Better a bland ad than no ad. Right?

France: New President? No Amnesty!

OJ get out of jail free
France flag
We're close to the second round of the French presidential elections, with two candidates leftover after the slaughter of the 1st round, when there were 10 candidates. The race to the top job is now between the socialist Francois Hollande and the conservative and current president Nicolas Sarkozy.

It has been a tradition here in France, when a president gets elected, on his first day of office, to grant a general amnesty. Obviously convicts who are about to be released get an earlier expected "get-out-of-jail" card, but also car and motorcycle owners who have been caught speeding, badly parking and running red lights get their outstanding tickets torn up. In fact, I remember under the previous socialist government of Mitterand, I had over 500 parking fines that I had not paid that were cancelled. So it was worth it to hold on to tickets and not pay them.

But no longer! Both candidates have let it be known that they will not grant any amnesty, not for convicts, not for tickets.

Royal Enfield: Fuel Economy Race

Royal Enfield BVM Fuel Run 2012

The Gloucestershire dealer of Royal Enfield motorcycle, BVM, had organized on the 14th of April a special race for Royal Enfield owners. Not a speed race, nor an endurance race, but a race to see who could beat the factory quoted Miles Per Gallon figure of 79 mpg.

Two categories Enfields were organized, motorcycles with EFI and ones with carburetors. The "race" was held on a 39 mile stretch of road.

The winner of the most economical run was a Royal Enfield Fury, riding the distance at 96.93 mph, the runner up did 92.76 and third best ran at 92.20 mpg. Despite riding a road with many steep climbs, they bettered the factory average by 22%.

Italy: Milan Police Dump Their 108 Electric Scooters

Oxygen Milan Police
Oxygen logo
#Electric #Police - Back in 2003, the municipal police of the city of Milan, Italy bought 108 electric scooters made by Oxygen, the Italian electric motorcycle maker. The 108 electric scoots were meant for the local police to patrol the streets of Milan; safely, quietly and with no pollution.

But instead of patrolling the streets, the 108 scooters are stored in some storage area, and not used. Abandoned! The reason? The batteries do not work, and make it impossible to ride.

So instead of doing something about it, the city has binned the scooters, worth some .......

It sounds sexual, and maybe it is intended, but this TV commercial is for Throttlepack from Vance and Hines. Installing it, apparently, will help you keep up with female motorcycle riders.

So there you go, if you are overtaken by a woman riding a motorcycle, she probably has a Throttlepack installed..... or she just can ride better and faster than you, and her bike is better and faster than yours.

USA: New Electric Motorcycle Speed Test Procedure

You might think it's a bit strange, but it's not. The Motorcycle Industry Council of the USA (MIC) have introduced a procedure to test and validate the top speeds of electric motorcycles.

Until now, a manufacturer of e-bikes could announce whatever he wanted for top speeds for their motorcycles. Vaporware? Fantasyware? Anything could go, since they would "test" their motorcycles under lab conditions, removing all aerodynamic drag factors from the bikes (like mirrors, top case, etc), use very skinny riders weighing next to nothing, and then publish a top speed for their bikes that no person would ever reach in real life.

MIC have now published a series of procedures for testing electric motorcycle's top speeds. In summary, the procedures entail:
